Reviewing local artists is always tough since there are many bands in Denver vying for attention.
But, one noteworthy band is The Foot., which just released its first EP, Marion St.
Originally a quartet, The Foot. now consists of bassist and vocalist Jeff McCollister, vocalist and guitarist Phil Barrett and percussionist Noah Shomberg. The Foot. is a blend of funk and rock, with a little pop incorporated. If the reader is familiar with Impulse by An Endless Sporadic, The Foot. is in a similar vein.
Marion St. was also cowritten by original band member Brandon Koch, who was a vocalist as well as guitarist for the group. This EP demonstrates the band’s abilities to play in the genres of pop, electronic, funk and rock.
This first song, “The Huntress,” captures rock and funk and transitions well between the two. Not many artists do this on a full-length LP, so it does in fact say something that The Foot. does this on a three-song EP. The second song, “Whiskey and Water,” sounds more like a pop-rock combination. The last song, “The Experience,” is solid pop rock.
The Foot. can be compared to Maroon 5 in all the right ways while listening to this song. It also has brief Jamiroquai tendencies, which is quite pleasantly off the beaten path.
The only real complaint about the album is the length. As soon as I became enthralled in the individual tracks, the album was over. This EP shows that The Foot. would definitely benefit from putting out a full album.
The unmistakable talent present on this EP desperately needs a full-length release to be more adequately expressed.
Yet, The Foot. seems to have gotten off to a good start. It has already played with bands such as the Flobots, Kinetix and Swollen Members. With the release of Marion St., the release of its first full-length album is something to look forward to in the future.
Next month, you will be able to find The Foot. performing at the Bluebird with Kinetix. You can find the band’s music at www.myspace.com/findthefoot, and the band’s music is now available for purchase on iTunes.
Outside of that, if you look hard enough for music venues around DU, you stand a good chance of finding The Foot.
