Nearly 175 women were offied bids to a sorority yesterday afternoon as recruitment ended over the weekend.

The fraternities will offer bids tonight and tomorrow.

Typically only freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible to pledge. There are slightly more than 3,000 undergraduate students in these three classes.

Recruitment lasted four days, during which time potential pledges explored the different houses while Greek chapters got to know potential members.

During the recruitment events, 255 female students toured the four traditional sorority houses: Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta and Gamma Phi Beta. Potential new sorority members also learned about each house’s sisterhood, philanthropy, traditions and values.

“Students get an opportunity to meet members of each chapter, learn about their founding, their history, what life is like for them on a daily basis, etc.,” said Megan Pendley, assistant director of Campus Activities.

DU’s eight traditional fraternities attracted 177 men who learned about the key ideals of each house and met the members of each chapter.

All houses participated in house tours the first night, however the events of the next few nights varied by fraternity within a set of guidelines.

The fraternities decided individually how many new member bids were offered.

The fraternities on campus are Chi Phi, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Theta Chi and Zeta Beta Tau.

“It has gone well. There haven’t been any complaints and no one’s violated the rules,” said Alex Levensalor, vice president of recruitment for the Interfraternal Council.

“I know this year we have a couple of international students going through the process which is great,” said Hannah Katz, president of Panhellenic Council, the governing body for sororities.

Two of DU’s Greek chapters do not participate in formal recruitment. Pi Lambda Chi, a Latina sorority, and Sigma Lambda Beta, a Latino fraternity, host their recruitment during winter quarter.
