The Fillmore Auditorium was transformed into the ultimate neon dance party Saturday when M.I.A and friends took control. After a long set up they got their wish. M.I.A appeared, wearing oversized t-shirts and glittering spandex pants. A style icon for many in the crowd, the outfit was well received as it matched many audience members.
M.I.A is an eclectic mix of culture. She is a British born performer of Sri Lankan descent and her style incorporates audio, visual and political art. Her performance was an explosion of color and sound. The show had a more intimate feel than most performances at the venue.
M.I.A’s personality was welcoming and inclusive as she performed songs from her high acclaimed albums, including “Sunshowers” and “Galang.” The crowd loved it.
Toward the end of the set, M.I.A. let the fans join her on stage. Hundreds of neon-and-glitter-clad fans rushed the stage for their chance to join in. For the lucky few who made it on, they made the most of their time and converted the stage into a dance floor that blurred the line between performer and audience.
After nearly causing a riot trying to rush the stage, the crowd finally settled down to party until the very last minute of the show.
M.I.A not only knows how to command a stage, but she made fans feel like they were part of the show.
Egyptian Lover kicked things off with his old-school-style beats and attitude. Armed with a drum machine and two dancers, Egyptian Lover did his best to hype up the crowd for the big event..
“These are what I use, no CD’s!” the DJ/ rapper proudly proclaimed as he held up two records. The performance was an homage to the 1980s when his career first began. Low B was up next and he returned the show to the present day. Known for his nightlife performances, the Philadelphia DJ was a good fit to prepare the crowd for the party that lay ahead. Before his set even ended the crowd could not contain themselves. With Low B’s blessing the crowd chanted for M.I.A. to take the stage.
