Peace Corps info session A Peace Corps information session will be held in Driscoll’s Fireside Room tomorrow from 5:30 to 7 p.m. A returned Peace Corps volunteer will be available to students to talk about various aspects of Peace Corps service, from the application process to the challenges of the service itself. A short film depicting life in the Peace Corps will be shown. The event is free and open to the campus and community. Live music night Late Night @ DU will host DU Unplugged- Live Music Night tomorrow night from 8 -10 p.m. at the Sidelines Pub. DU musicians will perform, and dinner is on the house for the first 50 people to arrive.
Project Homeless Connect is back Professor Peter Smith will give a lecture titled “Hugo vs. George: Latin America’s Pink Tide and the United States” on Thursday, May 15 at 5 p.m. at the Cherrington Cyber Cafe. The talk, sponsored by the Latin American and Carribean Studies Association in conjunction with the Sturm College of Law chapter of Amnesty International, will feature opening remarks by Dean Tom Farer. The lecture is free and refreshments will be served.
Swing dance competition Theta Chi fraternity and the Daniels College of Business is presenting DU’s Swingin’ with the Stars, a swing dance competition. It will be held in Driscoll Ballroom on Friday night from 5 – 11:30 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Kempe Foundation, an organization that works for the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect. Music will be provided by the DU Lamont Jazz Orchestra. Tickets will be on sale on Driscoll Bridge for $5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday. Lance Armstrong on campus Lance Armstrong will make a guest appearance on campus on Tuesday, May 13, as a part of DU’s LIVESTRONG Day. The event will feature stories from cancer survivors, information and resources about prevention and voter registration tables. The free event will be held on Driscoll Lawn from 2 – 4 p.m. A pre-order form for DU’s LIVESTRONG Day t-shirt is available by contacting Kerrie Rueda at krueda@du.edu. Pre-order price is $10. T-shirts will also be available at the event for $15. Proceeds from t-shirt sales will go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Cocktail benefit reception A cocktail reception will be held downtown at Zengo Restaurant in Riverfront Park on Tuesday, May 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. to benefit the Denver Public School’s A-Z Fund, a grant program for individual schools. DU students involved in the planning invite the campus and community to participate in the event.
Essay contest The Nation magazine is holding an essay contest for college students and will award a $1,000 grand prize and a subscription to Nation to the winner. Five finalists will be awarded $200 each. The 800 word or less submissions must answer the question: “What have you learned from a personal experience that the next president should know before setting the agenda for the country?” Entries will be accepted through May 31. A winner will be announced by Sept. 4. Essays can be submitted at studentprize@thenation.com.
DU Tube Deadline for submissions for DU Tube is June 3. Students are invited to submit video entries about life at DU for incoming students. Winning submissions will be shown at the 2008 Discoveries Orientation.
