An environmental awareness conference “Creating a Sustainable University: Strategies for Change” last Friday included various faculty, graduate, undergraduate and guest speakers enthusiastic about promoting sustainability on campus.

Timothy Weaver, assistant professor in the School of Art and Art History, called on DU to “expand reuse beyond just recycling.” This can be accomplished simply through education that integrates methods of reuse into freshmen orientation and by circulating this information among transfer and international students. He also suggested the introduction of more local and organic food options in DU cafeterias and eco-purchasing.

Andrew Goetz, professor in the Department of Geography, said DU needs to become completely “bicycle and pedestrian friendly.” According to Goetz, DU could have an “extremely influential voice on how the streets around campus are treated,” especially concerning the construction of sidewalks.

Several speakers charged that Campus Safety essentially inhibits student use of bicycles around campus, as rules for riding and parking are too strict, especially the requirement that all cyclists use U-lock in order to avoid confiscation of a bicycle.
