World on Wednesday Scandinavia

On Wednesday night students who are interested in studying abroad can learn about abroad programs in Scandinavia during World on Wednesday in Nelson Private Dining Room. Students can hear from returning abroad students and study abroad advisors. The event is free to all students.

History of Greek Lettered Organizations

The lecture “The Legacy of Service: The History of Black, Latino, Asian and Native American Greek Lettered Organizations” will be presented on Wednesday night at 7 in Sturm Hall’s Room 151. The lecture will include a discussion on the culture, identity, experience and the art of stepping.

Lecture on Peace in Columbia

Liza Smith, a former Peace Brigades International field volunteer, will present “Making Space for Peace: Nonviolent Protection in Columbia” on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Smith will talk about her experiences aiding indigenous people in their struggle for justice. Music and refreshments will be provided. The event will be held in the Cyber Café in Ben Cherrington Hall and is open to all students. Expert on economics to speak

Screening of The Confederate States of America

The CORD Film Series: The Confederate States of America will screen on Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m.

The documentary examines what the history of the United States would look like if the Confederate States would have won the American Civil War. The event is put on by the Graduate School of International Studies and will be held in the Cyber Café located inside Ben Cherrington Hall. Darfur Lecture

The lecture “Not On Our Watch: The Mission to End the Genocide in Darfur and Beyond” will be presented by John Prendergast on tonight at 7.

Prendergast is Co-Founder of the ENOUGH Campaign and Senior Advisor to the International Crisis Group. He has also worked at the White House and State Department during the Clinton administration. Prendergast frequently travels to Africa on peacemaking missions involving network news programs and politicians. His latest Not Our Watch offered a comprehensive history of the Darfur struggle.

Intro to Buddhism

Always wanted to know more about Eastern philosophy and Buddhism? Or just curious and want to find out?

Thursday night’s Introduction to Buddhism will provide information about the history of Buddhism, Buddhism of Nichiren and Soka Gakkai and how those who practice Buddhism view their life. “Gay? Fine By Me” T-shirt Project

Students can participate in the “Gay? Fine By Me” T-shirt Project every day this week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The purpose of the project is to give a voice to Americans who support equal rights for homosexuals. It is also to send a message against homophobia. For more information contact Christopher Turner at cturne22@du.edu.

Jackson/Ho China-East Asia Forum

As part of the Jackson/Ho China-East Asia Forum the China Center’s guest David Brown will present “How Stable is Deterrence in the Taiwan Strait?”

Brown is an adjunct professor in Chinese and Asian studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University. He also served for over thirty years as a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. State Department.

India Jazz Suites

On Friday at 2:30 p.m. the India Jazz Suites will perform in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. This performance exhibits a groundbreaking and historical collaboration exploring movement, rhythms and music. Performers include renowned Kathak maestro Pandit Chitresh Das and Emmy award-winning tap dance star Jason Samuels Smith.

After premiering in San Francisco in 2005, India Jazz Suites has received extensive critical acclaim and has toured around the U.S. and India. It was also chosen as the #1 Dance Performance of 2005 by the San Francisco Chronicle and won the prestigious Isadora Duncan Dance Award (Izzie) for Best Ensemble Performance of the year.
