Two weeks ago, students from the University of Denver traveled out to the Garden of the Gods to join forces with other members of Chapter 22 of the Mortar Board National Honor Society.
Nearly 50 students from DU, the University of Wyoming, Colorado College, Colorado State University and the University of Colorado dedicated themselves to the task of clearing dead shrubs surrounding the trails within the majestic park. The dry brush poses a serious threat of fire.
The park is maintained by Colorado Springs and the city relies on the effort of volunteers to maintain it.
The students sawed, clipped, cleared and sorted branches from dead wild oak bushes. They worked from 8 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. and the results were astounding.
It was difficult work but it provided an opportunity to spend time outdoors, meet new people, and help maintain the beautiful state we call home.
This is the second year that members of the DU Mortar Board participated in the Garden of the God’s clean-up event. For their excellent service work last year, the DU Mortar Board Honor Society was given the Project Excellence Award at the National Mortar Board Convention in Columbus, Ohio, earlier this year.
Watch for other events on campus sponsored by the Mortar Board, such as “Crush” soda sales for your valentine and flower sales at graduation. The Mortar Board offers membership only to eligible students each year during spring quarter. Learn more about the National Honor Society at http://www.mortarboard.org/.
