The DU Alpine Club has developed an enticing list of excursions and events for students
Two weeks ago, 40 students went biking, hiking and climbing in Moab, Utah. This past weekend, the club sponsored a climbing day trip in Castlewood Canyon.
The club is hosting a climbing trip fthis weekend in Penitente, a caving and hiking trip May 11-12 and a day of spring skiing on May 19 at Arapahoe Basin. That event will end with a barbecue.
“Our white-water rafting trip is always a popular one as well. Students get the opportunity to do something a little different,” said club president, Andy Librande. The rafting trip is May 25-27 in Brown’s Canyon.
“I really enjoy our spring trips, as the groups are a mix of abilities. It is always fun teaching someone how to climb or finding a new friend that is really into the outdoors,” said Librande.
“Our goal is to have a variety of trips and to ensure that as many students as possible get to go on those trips,” said Librande., “This spring has a lot of good opportunities for students to get outside and explore new sports or gain more skills in their current sports… we are always geared toward getting people to truly appreciate the outdoors.”
The club has introduced students to hidden parts of Colorado and nearby states while exposing students to different sports and recreational activities, which some students may never have experienced otherwise.
“At the end of all of our trips we hope that all our participants continue to be lifelong outdoor enthusiasts that truly appreciate the many opportunities that the great outdoors present,” said Librande.
The DU Alpine Club was founded in 1928 and is now one of the largest clubs, on campus with 320 paid members. It hosts some of the best attended activities, while encouraging students to, “learn more about themselves and their abilities while in the presence of the great outdoors,” said Librande.
Some, 475 students have participated in the club’s trips and the club has raised $38,000 and will have hosted a record of 26 off-campus trips this school year.
