Last week members of Greek community competed with one another to donate blood.
Helping the Denver Bonfils Blood Center with its blood drive on campus was only one of many events in which the Greek community participated in last Thursday during the annual Greek Week at DU.
“Traditionally, fraternity and sorority chapters are paired into teams that compete to win points to determine who the Greek Week champions are,” said Juan Miguel Blanco, Graduate Assistant of Student Activities at DU. “Points are determined by who wins events and/or who has the highest participation and contributes the most to the community service effort.”
The “Bloodiest Chapter” Competition pitted fraternity and sorority chapters against each other to see who could donate more blood and encourage non-Greek students to do so as well.
The Greek community also assisted with Project Homeless Connect 4 and was responsible for the Children’s Center at the event. The Children’s Center allowed homeless parents to leave their children at the designated Children’s Center located in Gates Field so they were able to get the financial and housing services they needed.
Greek Week was also a way to celebrate Greek life and build the relationships between members of the Greek community. Activities during the week allowed the Greek community to come together by working with one another. A volleyball tournament, talent competition, and Greek Olympics were only some of the events that occurred last week.
“For me Greek Week is great because it unites all the houses,” said Jenny Ly, a member of Delta Delta Delta. “Other times there is always a little tension between sororities, but during Greek Week, everyone is together having fun.”
One of the main objectives of the week long chain of events is also for students to meet people outside of their own sorority or fraternity.
“The best part of the week is getting to know other people at different houses,” said Sigma Chi DJ Close. “Being paired with different sororities and fraternities and working together all week makes it really easy to meet new people.”
