There is no Greek word for hamburger but that hasn’t stopped this Greek from making one of the most delicious hamburgers in Denver.

His gigantic hamburgers are juicy and piled high with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, special sauce and mustard. Taking the first bite into one of these hamburgers will make you happy to be alive.

Crown Burger Plus is owned by Telly Klissiaris and is located at 2387 S. Downing Street between a photography studio and a laundromat just a few blocks from campus. It opened in 2000 when Klissiaris bought the restaurant from a friend.

Klissiaris specializes in hamburgers and gyros but what is really worth making the short trip for is the mound of fries you’ll get when you order one of these massive burgers. This is the Mt. Everest of fries and finishing them all should get you a plaque on the wall (although it doesn’t). The fries are thin, crispy and lightly salted, perfect for dipping in ketchup.

The burger to get, and the name suggests it, is the DU Special, $6.99. This monster burger is piled high with three patties of beef and all the fixings and it is a true test of one’s hunger.

The small television just above the counter gives the place a more home feel. Get there at just the right time and you’ll be able to catch an episode of Wheel of Fortune while you eat Klissiaris’ specialty, the cheeseburger with turkey pastrami, $4.99.

Klissairis doesn’t do any print or TV advertising and relies on word of mouth to bring in business, which seems to be working.

“We get a couple hundred customers a day,” said Klissairis. “Lunch is our busiest time.”

Prices at Crown Burger Plus can range from around $7-10 including a drink with the burger and fries.

Although priced slightly higher than similarly named Crown Burger on South Colorado Boulevard, the un affilated Crown Burger Plus lives up to it’s name. Crown Burger Plus is the one with the Plus in the name and the Plus makes it better.

There may be no Greek word for hamburger but the Greek words for delicious should be Crown Burger Plus.
