The DU College of Education received a $10 million gift last week as part of a fundraising campaign to construct a new building and establish an endowment.

Philanthropists Carrie and John Morgridge donated the money to the school, partially funding construction of the building and providing money for the college’s endowment.

The college hopes to eventually raise $35 million. With the projected funds, the College of Education would spend $25 million on a new building and $10 million on the institute’s start-up costs and endowment.

With the grant from the Morgridges, the school will change its name to the Morgridge College of Education.

Five million dollars of the Morgridge’s donation will go toward the construction of the new College of Education building, planned for location off Evans Ave. between Race and High streets.

The Morgridges also plan to serve as co-chairs for the College of Education campaign committee. The Morgridge Endowed Professorship will be established and funded by the college.

The donation to the College of Education is not out of character for the Morgridges, who have given money to the Denver Public School Foundation, Mile High United Way, Children’s Hospital and the national Reading Recovery program in the past.

Carrie also serves as a member of the DU Board of Trustees and John has worked with former DU president Marc Holtzman as the co-chair of the Colorado Technology Alliance.

The donation will help to build the College of Education, which offers numerous graduate-level programs.

The college also administers DU’s Teacher Education Program, the Fischer Early Learning Center and the Ricks Center for Gifted Children. In recent years, the school has also created the Boettcher Teachers Program and the Richie Program for School Leaders.
