An AUSA Senate meeting on Tuesday Jan. 16 began with special request for money from the Business Ethics and Legal Studies Society.
BELS president Courtney Manlove, a freshman, petitioned the Senate for $13,000 to host a benefit concert in the spring.
The concert would bring together one main corporate band and three smaller bands at the Ritchie Center on or around April 3 of this year.
With a contribution of this size from DU, along with possible contributions from the Avalanche, Nuggets, and John Elway, Manlove believes BELS could raise over $400,000 in ticket sales, which would be donated to the people of Darfur.
“Darfur is a main issue in the world and with the backing that the university has it’s important to get them to help,” said Manlove.
BELS may also work with the Genocide Awareness Club on this project.
AUSA senators also discussed whether seniors should continue to vote in school- wide elections in the spring.
In other business, most senators felt that having seniors vote is important.
Although they will not be present for the next year they increase the voting pool since incoming freshmen obviously do not vote in the spring elections.
Two new clubs were approved for funding at this meeting: the University Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Club (UMADD) and the Economics Club.
UMADD is part of the national Mother’s Against Drunk Driving organization and is open to any DU student.
Creating more service learning classes during the interterm period was brought up as an idea for funding as well as the Graduate Student Association Council program.
The GSAC program would provide daycare for graduate and undergraduate students with children.
