Almost 400 male and female students participated in DU’s Greek Life Rush activities in order to become apart of a sorority or fraternity.
This year’s Rush was different because it was held the third weekend of the quarter instead of the first which had been the standard.
There were two reasons for the push back of events.
“We had scheduling conflicts- PeaceJam, staffing conflicts. We also waited because we wanted to give people going through recruitment a chance to make sure it was something they wanted to experience,” said Megan Pendley, assistant direct of campus activities.
There was a mixed reaction from the Greek community about the push back of their official recruitment time.
“I think that they were as community wondering how is this going to work? But it worked out and we have been able to have info sessions for both [the fraternities and sororities],” said Pendley. “Its great people are at least going to start the process. I want to see everyone make an educated decision, being Greek is not for everyone.”
It is unlikely that Rush will return to the first week of school next year.
“Second weekend instead of the first or third, more time without having it dragged out so long,” said Pendley. All new members must be initiated before winter break.
Sororities had 225 women sign up and pay the registration fee.
Pendley indicated that the number of applicants might mean a larger percentage will decide to become Greek.
For the sororities, signing up ahead of time is required.
Fraternities had 120 men sign up before rush but registration is not required.
Activities for the week start with house tours which were Thursday for the women and Friday for the men.
The rest of the weekend had activities to help both prospective greeks and Greek students make decisions including preference dinners.
