Senate representatives met on Tuesday to listen to appeals from various DU student organizations, and to discuss their own Senate appeal as well.
Cathryn Potter, President of the Faculty Senate, commenced the discussion by offering an appeal opportunity for the AUSA Senate. The appeal process is being implemented in order to determine what the next step will be towards making a decision as to who will be the 2006/2007 President and Vice President.
Potter’s proposal called for individual parties to convey, in written form, their arguments and their recommended solutions. This appeal will be completed in a timely manner in order to expedite the process effectively. All senatorial representatives agreed to Potter’s proposition and are currently working on their appeals.
The discussion continued with speeches from executive members of several DU student organizations requesting more funding for the 2006/2007 year.
The president of the Alpine Club expressed the club’s need for an increased amount of funding for next year. He also stated that Alpine Club is one of the most popular clubs on campus, and since they increased their membership significantly, they feel that they deserve more funding.
“Alpine Club is the oldest student-run club on campus. We have grown 40% since the beginning of this year, and we feel it is unfair that senate has decreased our funds by 5%,” said the Alpine Club president.
The Daniels Entrepreneurship Society was another student organization that felt they needed more money, although the 2006/2007 year will only be their second year. Two members of the Entrepreneurship Society expressed their plans for the future, and why more funding will be essential in attaining their goals.
“We want to continue bringing important speakers to campus next year that will be able to educate students about their business experience. We feel that we are an above average club, so we deserve above average funding,” said a member of the Daniels Entrepreneurship Society.
Another student organization that was interested in obtaining more funding was Circle K International. Circle K is a club that sends members to different places each year, including Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity. Members of Circle K even participated in a trip to New Orleans. Circle K feels that Senate should allocate more money towards their club, in order for its members to continue doing projects that benefit the community.
AUSA Senate took all requests into consideration. The next Senate meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. in the Driscoll Gallery.
