Many juniors and seniors who traveled abroad to study in a foreign country understand the amazingly experiential opportunity DU students are given from the study abroad program.
Though most students travel abroad for an average of four months, students may stay up to a year in their chosen country.
The international office on South Josephine street is extremely helpful, providing seminars, information packets and personal advisors for students. This year’s applications for studying abroad have been turned in and processed, and now applicants are now getting excited to plan their journeys.
These incredible experiences have been made more possible by an amazing scholarship program provided by a generous donation to DU.
The Cherrington Scholarship Program has become an asset to University of Denver study abroad programs. The scholarship allows students to pay their normal DU tuition, and have all other travel, living, and educational expenses covered by the University of Denver.
The Cherrington Scholarship makes living and studying in a foreign country a more attainable experience than ever before.
Rumor has it that before long one quarter of study abroad time will be a graduation requirement for students at DU.
Though potentially an incredible opportunity for fun and experience, study abroad students should be aware of some of the difficulties that may arise while living in a foreign country.
It would be wise for students to gather as much information about their country of study as possible before they get there. If people in their country speak a different language than English, it is advisable to learn as much of that language as possible to be better able to interact with locals and feel more comfortable in the society.
Another fantastic element of studying abroad is the possibility for students to get the most from their country of travel through geographic exploration.
European countries, for example, have unbelievable access to their bordering and neighboring countries. Seeing as much as possible while abroad can add a deep richness to a study abroad experience.
Students can often reap benefits such as special prices or access to certain places to support educational experiences. This familiarity with living in a different country for a short amount of time can become an unforgettable few months of a person’s life.
Many students have reported that their time abroad was only as positive as they made it. Remember to make the very most of your time by immersing yourself in the culture, and keeping an open mind about the differences between cultural groups.
Try to be accepting of elements of different traditions that are unfamiliar to you. With such fantastic resources at our expense, the student body at DU is incredibly fortunate.
For those of you going abroad in the fall: have a wonderful, safe and unique experience. Don’t forget to make irreplaceable memories, and take pictures!
