Student members of the Daniels Christian Community (DCC) hosted two guest speakers for a lecture on the relationship between business ethics and the Christian Faith on Tuesday at the Daniels College of Business.
The Daniels Christian Community at DU started in the fall of 2004. DCC’s main goal is to enhance awareness in Christianity and business while explaining the significance of molding the two together.
The group’s belief is that if a student comes to terms with the importance of Christianity in the work place, he or she will ultimately have a more enriching life, while at the same time becoming morally and ethically successful.
The guest speakers were Bill Cron, a senior systems analyst at the Department of Transportation and his wife Debbie Cron, a financial systems employee for Verizon.
Bill began with a short prayer that stressed the importance of Christianity in the workplace. He emphasized the growing use of technology and how it is affecting the world today.
Bill believes that increasing technological innovations can be used to benefit society as long as the people utilizing them are staying true to Christian morals.
“It is important to have students think about how God fits in their careers, and think through how the issues fit in today’s technological society,” Bill stated.
Debbie Cron shared an experience she encountered while working for MCI, previously known as WorldCom. The 2000 – 2002 “cooking the books” scandal resulted in the company’s bankruptcy. WorldCom reported $40 billion in false earnings, and Debbie, one of the many employees who knew nothing of the deception, resorted to her Christian faith to guide her. Debbie and a group of co-workers helped WorldCom and its employees by restating the earnings and “cleaning up the mess.”
Debbie was confident that her Christian faith helped her in this time of chaos and confusion.
“Every person can make a difference. If one person has the courage to do what is right, it will encourage others to do the same thing,” Debbie said.
DCC’s next lecture will be “Faith and Work Symposium – Integrating the Workplace, Christianity, and the Professional Life,” and will be held on May 20 at the Daniels College of Business.
