Ever had the desire to learn how to ballroom dance? Well, now you can without leaving DU’s campus.

The DU Ballroom Dance Club, started last year, is now trying to recruit more members with free introductory classes.

Xavier Lee is the president of the club and Veeka Sheverda is the vice president.

The club just recently got a new instructor, Terry Holmes. She has over 25 years of experience in all types of competitive and social dance, including tango, samba, waltz, salsa and rumba, said Sheverda.

Holmes and her husband, Gary, own TG Danzport Studio in Denver. They used to be competitive dancers, but now they enjoy teaching, said Sheverda.

The club is inviting anyone who is interested to the next three sessions for free by placing an ad in the calendar section of the DU website.

The dance club hopes to gain more members.

The free sessions started this past Sunday and continue on March 19 and March 26 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., which was changed from the original time of 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the ad.

However, to join the club, people interested will pay $40 for classes for the rest of the year, said Sheverda.

Sessions will be on the third floor of the Ritchie Center in dance studios A and B. The elevators are shut down on Sundays so students must take the stairs instead, said Sheverda.

Sheverda advises people to wear comfortable clothes and dancing shoes if possible. If not, wear shoes without traction. “So don’t wear sneakers,” said Sheverda.
