The AUSA Senate elected Brian Flaherty as the new NSME Senator in the meeting on Tuesday, and Senate funds were allocated for several student projects.

Flaherty is currently acting as one of the three Chairs of Intercollegiate Athletics, but ran for the position of NSME Senator, recently vacated by senior Marissa Carleton, as another way “to give back to the university,” he said.

“I’d like to get more information out to science majors, and I will be working to create a set of guides for science, math, and engineering majors to help them prepare for graduate education,” he discussed as part of his platform.

In addition to the fulfillment of the position of NSME Senator, the Senate allocated funds to both the Club Hockey team and bill for a project to remodel the Student Commons.

The Club Hockey team petitioned the Senate for additional funds on top of their club team money to travel to the National Club Hockey Tournament in Rochester, NY.

Matt Brown, the president of the team, was present at the meeting and was very enthusiastic about the team and their potential for success.

“We are excited to be in a position to go to Nationals, something that has never happened in the history of the school,” said Brown.

Additionally, funding was allocated for Bill 6-B, a bill designed “to pursue a plan to remodel the Commons to look more like Jazzman’s.”

This lack of sufficient student space on campus was brought up as a concern in the Chancellor’s Roundtable last week, and this bill is the first effort to address this concern.

The initiative received $1,475 as a one time fund to commence stage one of the reconstruction to make Commons not only more accessible and useful for students, but also more modern and attractive.

Regarding all student funding, DCB Senator Clinton Emmerich reminded all the Senators, and all student organizations requiring funding, that all applications for funding for the 2006-2007 school year are due March 31.
