I am responding to the article entitled, “Coombe Hears Student Concerns,” in the 11/1/05 issue of the Clarion. In that article a student was quoted as stating to Chancellor Coombe that ideas for a designated driver program, as well as a bus shuttle to the mountains, were “shot down right away” by the Student Health and Counseling Center. In truth, the Student Health and Counseling Center has never been approached about supporting a bus shuttle to the mountains. Moreover, we are currently working with two students on the creation of a designated driver program. The challenge lies in obtaining funding for these activities and in addressing the liability issues inherent in such programs. The Student Health and Counseling Center supports both these programs and wants to help students in their efforts.
