For students who crave breakfast food or pizza after midnight, there are more places to chow down.Two local restaurants in the DU neighborhood have recently extended their hours on weekends to accommodate the needs of students after a late night of partying.Pete’s University Park CafCB), on the northwest corner of University Boulevard and East Evans Avenue, is now open 24 hours a day from Thursday to Sunday and Fuhgidabowdit Pizza on University Boulevard is serving slices until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.”There’s not a lot to do here as far as eating goes,” said Dean Contos, the general manager of Pete’s, who attended DU from 1981 to 1983. “It’s always been that way. You’ve got the Stadium, the Border and Spanky’s, and then when the night is over there is nowhere to wind down. Our job is to give students a place to go on the way home.” Contos’ father, Pete, owns seven restaurants in the Denver area and recently purchased a new location to renovate next month. The location on University Boulevard has been open for seven years, and Thursday was the first time it stayed open overnight instead of closing at 11 p.m.Pete’s Kitchen, located on the corner of East Colfax Avenue and Race Street, is the only other one of their stores open 24 hours a day and has had much success, according to Contos.”I think this will be as successful, if not more,” Contos said. “This is a great time of year because of hockey and basketball getting started. We always have people coming in before and after games – sometimes much after.”The owners of Fuhgidabowdit Pizza, which opened in January, also noticed a large number of students walking through the area late at night, presumably leaving bars, according to manager Dan Fox. The restaurant began leaving its doors open until 3 a.m. on weekends about three weeks ago.”We’ve had a great response,” Fox said.But these eateries are not the first to feed students at a nontraditional hour. Jerusalem Restaurant, on the southwest corner of East Evans Avenue and South High Street, has stayed open until 5 a.m. on weekends and 4 a.m. on weekdays for 27 years.Wendy’s, on the corner of South University Boulevard and East Harvard Avenue, opened in January and keeps the drive-through window open until 2 a.m.Contos, however, feels that Pete’s has an edge over the competition.”There’s no place to have breakfast at night,” he said. “You can’t get eggs or bacon at Jerusalem’s. Here we have good food, reasonable prices and serve a breakfast audience.”
