With his fast-paced lyrics and astounding vocal range, it is no wonder that musician Jason Mraz sold out the Fillmore Auditorium last week as he stopped in Denver as a part of his current nationwide tour. Promoting his new album, Mr. A-Z, which dropped this past summer, Mraz took the stage in front of fans ranging in age from teens to young adults, and immediately launched into songs from the album. The self-proclaimed “Geek,” printed on the pink shirt he wore onstage, Mraz spent time in between sets joking with the crowd, and at one point, tossed candy from a pumpkin bucket to audience members in the spirit of Halloween. Many of the songs performed by Mraz were longer at his live performance than the recorded versions on the CD. Several numbers included lyrical and instrumental additions to add variety. For example, during “The Remedy,” one of Mraz’s more popular songs from his first album Waiting for my Rocket to Come, he chose to add the chorus from Oasis’s “Wonderwall,” and encouraged the fans to sing along. Throughout the performance, fans swayed with his relaxing tunes, including songs “Bella Luna” and “Mr. Curiosity.” At one point during the latter number, Mraz launched into an opera-styled solo that lasted approximately five minutes. The impressive addition to the song caused fans to scream with obvious approval. Along with many songs from his new album, Mraz chose to perform several of his popular songs from his first album, including “You and I Both” and the “Waiting for My Rocket to Come.”Throughout the performance, Mraz held a clean and solid voice. Though accompanied by various musicians onstage, Mraz’s voice held strong and resounded impressively in the auditorium. Mraz also showed considerable talent during the concert when he added skatting solos to some songs. Mraz closed the performance with an encore including his song “Geek in the Pink.” Surprisingly, during the concert, Mraz chose not to perform his first single from Mr. A-Z, “Wordplay,” causing some disappointment among fans. Though fans seemed pleased with the overall concert and Mraz’s obvious talent, the many slow songs he chose to perform caused a minor lag during the middle of the concert. It lacked a necessary balance between upbeat and relaxing songs.Despite the lag, the concert left many satisfied. Mraz’s incredible voice and impressively constructed songs offset any qualms possible about the concert. His live performance earned a new-found sense of appreciation for Mraz and his music.
