The Department of Campus Safety is currently withholding statements on the racial profiling accusations made by the Diversity Committee of the AUSA Senate Oct. 18. “We haven’t really gotten our statement ready for publication yet,” said Assistant Director of Campus Safety Michael Holt. “We’re going to respond to that as a department.” Campus Safety is planning to meet with the senate and the various student organizations involved. “We’re working with Carl Johnson to set up some meeting times to meet with the different student groups,” said Donald Enloe the Director of Campus Safety. Currently there are no definite dates for the meetings. The Diversity Committee stated that Campus Safety personnel have been targeting minority students without cause. “We would like for an investigation of these incidents,” said Fawntain Spencer, vice president of the Black Student Alliance (BSA), and a member of the Latino Student Alliance (LSA).Spencer has heard “more than ten” cases within her organizations and among friends.Donna Shepherd, senior and president of the BSA, has also heard testimonies from members as well. Most of the cases involved unnecessary questioning and identification checking. “They just wanted to know where the person was going,” said Shepherd. Theo Chapman, a junior, stated that one night while walking home from a friend’s house, a Denver police car stopped him. “The cop gets out of the car and tells me to first pull my hands out of my pockets,” said Chapman who then had to present both his student and state identification cards. The police officer told Chapman that they were questioning everybody because they were looking for a suspected rapist. “What made me mad is that the description of the rapist was a dark skinned, white male or Hispanic male,” said Chapman. “I’m black; I’m neither one of those.”Spencer believes that whatever is going on, minority students are not at ease on University grounds. “This should be a place where we feel comfortable like every other student on this campus,” said Spencer. “I’d like to hear what their response is,” said Spencer. “I’d like to know what they’re prepared to do.”
