The Spanish Peformance Theater class will present three short plays by three different authors tonight in Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall.
The first play is called “El Delantal blanco” or the “White Apron” was written by Chilean author, Sergio Vodanovic. The play looks at the relationship between a female employer and her female employee while they enjoy a day at the beach.
The focus of the work is how artificial and quickly these relationships can change including the myth of social classes. The play uses humor and comedy to deal with these large social issues.
Vodanovic was born in 1926 and was also a lawyer, journalist and a university professor.
The second play, “Juego de damas” or “Game of Women” written by Julio Matas a Cuban author. The story follows the three women who are reunited within the context of Castro Cuba. It examines how their relationships have changed over the years when two stayed in Cuba and one left Cuba with a rich American. The play relies on acid language and is dramatic.
Matas was born in Havana in 1931. He has taught all over the United States.
The final play is called “El Tigre” or “The Tiger” written by Demetrio Aguilera-Malta an Ecuadorian author. The play details four men working in the Ecuadorian jungle who think they are being hounded by a tiger. The work is loaded with symbolism as it examines humans relationship’s with superstitions and fear.
Aguilera-Malta was born in Ecuador in 1909. In addition to being a playwright he also was a journalist and a painter. Also, he was a member of the communist party.
The plays are being performed at 6 p.m. and will run about an hour and a half. The performance is free.
