Often a new upgrade is just what a story line needs. And that is just what “Robots,” a new animated movie delivers.

This animated tale follows the coming-of-age adventure of Rodney Copperbottom, voiced by Ewan McGregor, who travels from his small hometown to the large Robot City to realize his dream of being an inventor.

When he gets to Robot City he heads straight to inventing headquarters to show his idea, but is turned away.

While at the plant he discovers that Bigweld, the boss, voiced by Mel Brooks, is no longer in charge and that Ratchet, voiced by Greg Kinnear is the new boss. He meets and makes friends with a group of rag-tag robots his first day, led by Fender, voiced by Robin Williams.

Copperbottom and his new friends soon uncover Ratchet’s plot to stop making parts but full upgrades.

This would make a lot of robots, including Fender obsolete. Together they set out to save the day and the Robots. And in the end good overcomes evil.

While this may be a familiar story, “Robots” is definitely worth watching. The animation is superb. The fantasy world literally came to life on the screen.

And soon, the viewers totally entranced in the fantasy world that had been created. The colors are amazing and every detail has been seen to. It makes the real world look dim and boring by comparison.

The real magic in this movie are the voices. The all-star cast really makes the robots seem like characters and not machines.

While McGregor is the lead character, Robin Williams is at his best. He is allowed to improve the entire movie and that is when he is at his best.

He changes voices, tones, accents almost as often as the animators have to change the backgrounds.

Another notable voice belongs to Brooks, who projects an old voice full of compassion for all robots.

However, the cast of friends really steal the show. They are voiced by Amanda Bynes as Piper, Drew Carey as Crank and Jennifer Coolidge as Aunt Fanny. They are hysterical with one liners all the way through the movie.

This is a great movie to walk into and be transported to another world.

It won’t be a deep intellectual experience, but it is one worth having. Sometimes you need to be reminded that the good guys can finish first and that you can do anything just being yourself.

Take some time and check out “Robots.” The story is old, but the characters are new.
