When I heard Beck’s newest album Guero, I was hooked.

His style is refreshing and each song has a different, new sound.

This is a man who changes his style, it seems, with every waking moment.

Music Editor Dave Heaton is just as amazed with his transformation.

Beck used to be a “floppy haired bohemian playing a leaf blower on stage, rapping on MTV about being a loser, minutes after getting your attention with a singled called ‘MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack,” said Heaton.

That bizarre Beck is no more, but he has not lost his roots.

Guero incorporates soothing guitar, piano and harmonica rifts with his unique, tranquil voice, creating an indie rock feel.

He re-teamed with the band The Dust Brothers, as he did for previous album Odelay.

Together, they create a group that uses a distinct array of instruments to create an overall pleasing effect.

They give the music a hip-hop feel, fused with more traditional sounds of banjos and sitars.

Beck’s use of instruments and vocal variations creates a sound that shows he is a musician of great talent.

“E-Pro,” the first track on the album, creates a funky, gleeful beat that could easily be heard in nightclubs across the country.

The guitar and bongos emphasize a beat that seems dying to be danced to.

The Latin sounding “Que Onda Guero” incorporates Spanish conversation between friends with a pop sounding, jiving beat and Beck’s unmatchable lyrics.

The song, “Girl,” uses a symphony orchestra to back up his eclectic vocals.

This synthesis shapes the beautifully constructed balance between Beck’s rapping and the string instruments.

“Black Tambourine” maintains a gloomy funk/jazz sound that is reminscient of classic rock pieces from the 60s and 70s.

Fans of White Stripes front man Jack White will enjoy “Go It Alone.”

His bass guitar can be heard contributing to the song’s well-sculpted, strong beat.

I would highly recommend this album to any Beck fans, as well as those who are not as familiar with his music.

His tunes appeal to anyone, incorporating hip-hop, pop and 70s jazz to create an overall enjoyable listening experience. Beck creates an eclectic feel to his music that shows a wide variety of influences.

Guero was released in March and can now be found in stores nationwide.
