That’s right, even your nearly infallible editorials editor can be wrong sometimes. Seriously, though, after writing the Pub editorial, an event happened to change my negative perspective on things.
Though I can’t retract most of what I wrote about the establishment, I can say that two of the Sidelines employees showed real goodness of heart and a willingness to do a good deed that reversed my normally dark views on the human condition.
After the cookie situation last week, in which two girls performing a good deed were sued successfully for it, my views on the way people treat each other could not have been worse. Sidelines employees Quincy Hickman and Ileia Chapman changed all that. Instead of taking a deserved smoke break, these two went out of their way to bring myself and two other newspaper staffers food while we were working in our office.
There was no need to do this, no incentive and no external motivation. There was only a chance to do a daily good deed and make somebody’s day. That somebody this week was me, and I was truly touched by their kindness. I also realized the downfalls of making generalizations. Just because some people are one way does not mean that there are not diamonds in the rough in any organization. This week, I salute your random act of kindness, Quincy and Ileia. Thank you for restoring my faith in the human race.
