Finally, telling someone to meet you in hell has a positive meaning. Devil’s Food, 1024 South Gaylord St., serves up equally eclectic, mouth-watering and sinful fare.
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. All three menus feature something that is guaranteed to please everyone dining.
For breakfast, customers choose from build your own omelets, quiche of the day, pancakes, stuffed French and of course any of the pastries from the full scale bakery.
The omelets are all three-egg with choice of three fillings. The Omelets can come with a variety of cheeses including cheddar, swiss and feta. Also, on the list are the familiar omelet vegetables including bell peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes. But, the list also includes more exotic choices like green chilies, caramelized onions and kalamata olives. Bacon and prosciutto are choices for the non vegetarians.
The omelets are literally stuffed to the point of overflowing with the ingredients falling out on to the plate. The omelets are served with the standard side dish; a new red potato dish nicely spiced. The omelets are at the higher end of the price scale at $8, but they are well worth the extra money.
If you are with a friend and willing to share a good-sized meal is to split and omelet and order one pancake ($2) on the side. It is the perfect-sized breakfast, so you don’t feel the need to roll back into bed.
At breakfast time, you can also choose from French toast made from the traditional Jewish sabbath braided egg bread, challah. You can get it plan or stuffed with fruit reasonably priced at $6/$8. Their buttermilk pancakes are wickedly delicious.
For a lighter meal consider starting out the day with a bowl of yogurt and fruit for $5.
For lunch and dinner, the menu becomes comparatively larger.
There are soups, sandwiches, salads, pastas and full size entrees.
The nicoise salad was the perfect-sized meal for the middle of the day.
The salad features perfectly fresh, seared tuna with hard-boiled eggs, green beans and, of course, the black olives from where the salad gets its name.
All of these ingredients are served on top of wild field greens. The meal is filling, I did not leave the table hungry, but I also did not feel unpleasantly stuffed. The dressing, the house vinaigrette adds zest to the salad. I asked for extra to drizzle over the salad. The salad is on the slightly pricer side at $12.
The sandwiches are all made with a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. The majority are not vegetarian friendly. The sandwiches are priced at $6- $8.50.
The pastries are all diabolically good, because looking at them takes all of your will power to resist.
Another enjoyable aspect of the restaurant is the interior. The walls are all painted red, and instead of being obnoxious it is bizarrely relaxing.
The walls highlight the art on the walls, all of which is by local artists and for sale. Devil’s Food is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurant is also a no cell phone zone.
This is not a place to eat if you have somewhere pressing to be, but a great place to share a meal with friends.
So, next time you are strolling on Gaylord with friends in the Denver sunshine, stop in for a devilishly good time.
