Last-minute schedule changes and a low priority at area ice rinks haven’t stopped women’s club hockey vice president Katie Lowry from leading her squad to nine wins so far this season.
The club team vice president has had to deal with the headaches of scheduling, an out-of-shape team after Christmas break, and the maddening problem of getting bumped from scheduled games and practices for higher priority teams.
“Basically, the rink told us that we were not a priority,” said Lowry. “If something bigger and better comes along, we get bumped.”
Though Lowry said the rink situation is finally improving, she must attend to further annoyances. Lowry has taken these responsibilities in stride, especially considering how she landed the positions.
“I actually was kind of pushed into the whole vice-president situation,” she said. “We have alumni, staff, and faculty on our team so we can have enough players and the president and vice president have to be students. My friend Alie and I are almost the only students that aren’t freshmen.”
Lowry still contends that her toughest challenge came while getting the team back into shape after the fall break.
“Right after the break we were all horribly out of shape,” she said. “We came out and were shut out 4-0 by a horrible team. The toughest thing was trying to get the team back on track.”
But getting the team back on track is just what she has done.
Lowry’s dedication to her team is such that, if it takes someone to carry most of the responsibilities, she will gladly shoulder the burden. Also one of the team’s assist leader, she says she still manages to have a good time, even with all the headaches.
