The University of Denver Snowboard and Ski clubs do more than slide down icy mountain slopes; they also open up their hearts and wallets to those in need.
Tomorrow, the Snowboard club will be hosting their annual “Wax-N-Tune” fundraiser in Driscoll, with the Ski Club participating as well. The clubs will be providing a hot wax and tuning service for skis and snowboards for $10 (the services can also be purchased separately for $6 each). Snowboards and skis can be dropped off in the Driscoll Ballroom between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
All profits from this fundraiser will be split between the Red Cross tsunami aid and a “beginner day” of lessons for DU students who want to learn how to snowboard.
The hot wax and tuning service will include a complete cleaning and removal of old wax from the base of the skis or board. Dirt and grit will also be removed in the cleaning, which will be followed by a coating of high performance wax.
Daniel Ritchie, vice president of the DU Snowboard Club, claims that the waxing will include the club’s “special techniques” to ensure that the wax provides “the fastest and longest lasting finish.”
After the waxing, a tuning will follow, including a full edge sharpening and deburring, followed by a polishing and de-tuning of “tips and tails.”
Edge bezels will be performed if they are requested, though they are not necessary. The club will also have a table set up on Driscoll Bridge to sign up new members and pass out information. Though the Snowboard Club originally planned the event, the Ski Club wanted to assist as well.
Though skiers and snowboarders have a reputation for not getting along very well, the leaders of both clubs hope that this event can bring them together and benefit both clubs and the DU community as a whole.
“It’s rare that skiers and snowboarders will be working side by side,” said Ritchie.
