Okay, DU hockey fan are more enthusiastic this year. But they’re still not pumped-up enough.

That’s right, for a season after an improbable and unbelievably successful championship run, fans at the school are still under par. On the surface, all that has changed is that some students stand up during the entire game, and more games have been sold out. The same, dull and appallingly overused cheers are still there, as well as the crimson-and-gold lacking wardrobes.

What will it take to inspire fans to care about what happens in these games?

Just standing at the games to be “seen” won’t do much else besides infuriate fans behind you. Going to games just to say, “Hey, I was at the game, didn’t you see me” doesn’t do anything for the team at all.

Why go to the games to stand there with your arms crossed, chatting with other friends or reciting the same cheer you’ve heard at least eight times before during the game? Is it worth the $5 to go to another social scene?

Hockey is the university’s marquee sport. All I am asking is that fans treat it as such. Has anyone seen a Colorado College hockey game recently? They stack the stands with a sea of yellow and black every game, even games against unranked and poor teams.

I’m not saying that we should all wear uniforms to every game and lose our voices screaming. I’m only asking that we act like enthusiastic fans.

Just wear a DU sweatshirt, maybe even some socks with a crimson-and-gold pattern. Maybe we could just yell the names of our guys and boo the names of the other team. I’m not even saying you even have to groan, gasp or cheer at the right times. By no means does going to a hockey game mean you have to know hockey.

I love the higher attendance, and the standing is a step forward. I’m sure the team thinks the same way.

The team could use some help right now, and that needs to come from you- the fans. An embarrassing shutout loss to Michigan Tech really shows that something needs to get on track if the Pioneers are going to repeat.

Who knows what that something is? Renewed and Reenergized fan support may be just what the Pioneers ordered. So all I’m asking is, swap the Burberry from some school colors and cheer our guys on as we inch closer to the playoffs.
