What do you get when you mix Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch and pretty insects?
You get Butterfly Boucher, Australian Indie Princess.
The first question I had when I picked up “Flutterby,” her first album, was Butterfly her real name?
I also wondered if someone named Butterfly can actually sing?
Both answers were yes. Her name is actually Butterfly. Her older sister’s name is Sunshine, and yes, not only can she sing but she can JAM.
Butterfly plays all the instruments by herself, and writes all her songs.
This is refreshing, especially in a business as commercialized and jaded as the music business.
Her voice is clear, with little color, but a lot of kick.
True to her name, Butterfly flits from style to style, often changing subject mid-song.
“Flutterby” provides a very good idea of Boucher’s musical range and creativity.
Included on the album were vibes, guitars, drums, piano, bass, organ, mellotron, field organ, toy piano (in “Soul Back”), banjo and various percussion instruments (including planks of wood, a steel wheel, timpani, and a hammer (on “Busy”).
Boucher’s album came out in October, but it hasn’t gotten a ton of attention.
It deserves some.
Borrow a copy and decide for yourself whether Butterfly sounds more like Avril or a bug.
