The Latino Student Alliance and the VIP Partnership Program are presenting the play “Papi, Me and Cesar Chavez” tonight at 6:30 in Sturm Auditorium.
The play is about the march from Delano, Calif., to the state capitol in Sacramento that was organized by Chavez, leader of the United Farm Workers Union, to protest the working and living conditions of migrant farm workers.
The march is seen from the perspective of a child. The play recreates a tumultuous era in California’s labor strife and examines the civil rights movement as it was adopted and used by the Latino community. Chavez subsequently became one of the most well known activists in the United States.
The play was written and directed by Anthony J. Garcia, the artistic director and playwright-in-residence for Su Teatro in Denver. This theater company is the third oldest Chicano troupe in the U.S. Su Teatro, which grew from Chicano movement’s social activism, develops and produces more plays than any other Chicano theater company. Admission is free.
