After opening at the end of last quarter, DU’s new C-store, located in Centennial Halls, has many students very excited.

“It definitely has a lot more stuff than it used to,” said sophomore Jacob Freedman, who lives just across the street in Centennial Towers.

“The goal was two fold: to get the old C-store out of the ‘hole in the wall’ in order to improve customer satisfaction and also to offer a uniquely different option for students that focused on a healthy choice,” said Deborah Tyson, director of housing operations for Department of Residence.

This health conscious idea was supported by students, who voted in a survey conducted last spring, “that a smoothie bar would be preferred over a sandwich or pizza shop,” said Tyson.

“They’re delicious,” said first-year Trent Minsha while slurping down a Raspberry Rapture

To evaluate success, Sodexho, which along with the Department of Residence provided much of the funding for the new store, will conduct a campus-wide food service assessment which will include C-stores in both Halls and Johnson-MacFarlane dormitories.

“Furthermore, as an initial sign of customer satisfaction, net sales in this C-store have increased dramatically from day one of the opening,” said Tyson

“Several folks have been kicking around the idea of a new C-store for several years,” said Tyson.

The planning group faced obstacles such as space constraints and infrastructure support, but the idea of using a portion of the Halls main lounge, solved both.
