You crawl through the brush.
Explosions going off all around you.
All of a sudden you look up to see the barrel of a rifle pointed down straight into your face.
“Prepare to meet your maker,” the voice on the other end of the rifle says.
You close your eyes to wait for the inevitable when all of a sudden you hear the ring of your cell phone.
Ok, so you’re not really in the brush but sitting in your home, and you’re not watching true warfare, but the movie “The Battle of Shaker Height”.
This is the second film produced by film makers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon through their competition Project Greenlight.
The winners this time around are Erica Beeney for writing and Kyle Rankin and Efram Potelle for directing.
The film stars Shia Lebeouf, Amy Smart and Eldon Henson. In “The Battle of Shaker Heights,”
Kelly (Lebeouf) is an ordinary 17 year-old-boy. He gets picked on at school, argues with his parents and has a huge crush on his friend’s pretty sister, Tabby (Smart).
Just for fun, he likes to re-enact World War II battle scenes. Taking out his repressed aggression on the battle field.
During one intense battle he meets his antithesis, Bart (Henson), who he becomes friends with.
With this new friendship, Kelly finds the confidence to take control of his life.
This novice film has a lot of heart and spirit to it.
The characters have actual depth unlike the kind of tin can product that Hollywood has come out with over the past couple of years.
Project Greenlight began three years ago through the work of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Chris Moore, and Miramax Film and Television.
The contest and the filmprocess aired on Home Box Office in August, 2003.
The contest, in short, was created to give an aspiring screenwriter and director a shot at the big time.
After the success of the first round through, they have come back to do it again.
“The Battle of Shaker Heights” is now currently available on Miramax video and DVD to rent or own.
This is certainly one film that should added to every collection.
