Intramural and club sports, ranging from broomball to judo, are offering a wide variety of competitive and fun sports opportunities for most students.

Intramural sports are open to students, faculty or staff who want to get involved and compete.

Intramurals start next week, although the deadline for filling out forms is Wednesday.

“The big club sports are men’s hockey, judo, men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer and, of course, skiing and snowboarding,” said Dan Goldberg, sports program coordinator. “Many of those teams compete against club teams from other schools, but we also offer non-competitive sports at the intramural level such as broomball, flag football, indoor soccer, 3-on-3 basketball and 4-on-4 volleyball.”

Sports change every quarter and if there is a sport that is not currently offered the process starting a new club is fairly easy, said Goldberg.

“I’ve had a good experience with club basketball,” said Garrett Thompson, treasurer of the basketball club. “It [club basketball] is a great way to get to know people above and beyond the fun of playing basketball.”

At the club level, some teams enter into a league where they compete against other teams that aren’t affiliated with DU. The intramural level is not as competitive, but still lots of fun, said Thompson about the basketball club.

The easiest way to find out about a club or start one is to go to www.recreation.du.edu. There you can download the application forms and hand them in to Goldberg in his office on the third floor of the Ritchie Center.
