KVDU hosted a Battle of the Bands competition at the Driscoll Lawn on Wednesday. Planned for three months, the event featured seven bands from different genres of music from Rock to Acoustic Pop.
Each band was given 30 minutes to perform at its best in front of three judges and supporting students. Each band were evaluated by their song writing ability, talent, originality, stage performance, synchronization and overall performance.
The judges consisted of three DU students involved in KVDU, although others had been invited.
“We were supposed to have representatives from Universal and Sony to judge the competition,” said Nick Mezger, KVDU station manager. “However, they canceled on us at the last minute.”
At first, the event attracted a large audience from students leaving Sturm Hall after class. However, people began to leave once their curiosity was satisfied.
Those who stayed longer at the competition were either enjoying the day or were there to support their friends’ band. One of those students, Catherine Case, a freshman, thought the event would have had a larger audience if it had taken place at a venue like the Ogden or Filmore.
“If the competition was held at a place where they serve beer, more students would probably show up for these events,” Case said.
Other suggestions to boost student involvement was to hold the competition at local bars so students do not have to travel far and they can still drink alcohol. Another suggestion was to have more advertising at an early time in the month or week.
