Read the sign: handicap parking only for disabled

Dear Editor,

I am appalled at the lack of concern shown by our students for persons with physical handicaps. Every time I walk through the library parking lot, cars not bearing any handicap parking permits or license plates fill the majority and sometimes all of the designated handicap spaces. These parking spaces are meant for people with disabilities, not those plagued by sloth. This practice demonstrates the selfish, disconcerted nature of some of our students, and it is an embarrassment to the rest of our law-abiding student body. Parking Services should put more energy into policing these violators, as well as raise the fines (currently only $60) to $200 (what you would pay for violating the same law in any other parking lot in the city). Hopefully then people will get the message that illegal use of handicap parking spaces violates the law that was established to protect people with disabilities. If you know someone who misuses handicap parking spaces please let them know that it is wrong, and that the spaces are there for a reason. It is also illegal to park in the marked-off areas between handicapped spaces. Those spaces are designed to allow persons with wheelchairs, walkers and crutch the necessary room that they may need to safely enter and exit their vehicles. – Patrick Karr
