With a new record coming out in June and a guest appearance from a friend, the Boston-based band, Guster, is quite excited for its current tour which makes a stop in Denver this weekend.
Their new album, Keep it Together, is scheduled to be released June 24th.
The tour stops at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver this Friday at 7:30 p.m. I had a chance to talk to the lead guitarist and vocalist Adam about the tour, album and life as a member of Guster.
Elliot Parks: Why should anyone come to your concert?
Adam Gardner: Because I will be taking off my pants at every show. No really, I am really excited for this tour. We have a fourth guy, Joe Pisapia, on the stage with us for half the set. He is really an amazing guy who has made this tour special. Don’t let this frighten you though, it is still us for sure, but he allows us to give a better preview of the album. We only have three sets of hands and Joe will play many different instruments.
EP: Your album took two years to record, are you glad it took so long?
AG: No. It was a difficult process, but we learned so much. It was really expensive and very tiring. I am happy with the overall outcome; there is nothing about this album that I would change because we had time to go back over the things we didn’t like and make the corrections. This is by far our best album.
EP: Who is your favorite member of Guster?
AG: Joe (Pisapia) is. He really brings a new dimension to this band that I think the audience will enjoy.
EP: If you could be any coin, like a penny or a nickel, what would you be and why?
AG: Probably the Susan B. Anthony dollar. Have you seen those? Or a 50B” piece. You know the big ass ones because bigger is better.
EP: Is there anything you guys have up your sleeves for this tour?
AG: Yes.
EP: Okay, if you want a quick meal, what do you make?
AG: Polenta. It comes in a tube and you just throw it in the microwave.
EP: Do you prefer to play for a packed house or a handful of diehards?
AG: Both. Hopefully it is a packed house of diehards. This tour has been and it is great. Big ass venues are great because it is amazing to play for a big room of people [who are] there excited to see you. You see them as one giant flowing entity. But it is also nice to play smaller places because you can look at the faces of people and see how they are enjoying the music.
EP: What is the funniest movie you have ever seen?
AG: “Waiting for Guffman,” it is so good and hilarious. Parker Posey is in it and she is an actress I love and respect.
EP: What are some of the hobbies the band has taken up?
AG: We like to play Virtual Tennis on Sega in the back of the tour bus. We have recently gotten into the X-Box, where we play Halo.
EP: What has the craziest Guster fan ever done to please the band?
AG: Well, just last week someone at one of our concerts found Barbie dolls that look just like us. They cut the hair and made clothes for them so that they look exactly like us. It is kind of freaky, but we now each have a doll of ourselves.
EP: What would be your number one pick for a place to play a concert?
AG: Well…I am not just saying this to suck-up, but I would have to say Red Rocks. That would be a dream…I
