The University of Denver’s radio station, KVDU, needs more student support, in order to become a success.
In the radio business, holding a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) licensed frequency is the best, if not only, way to get established, said Mike Metzger, KVDU station manager.
KVDU doesn’t have a frequency yet. It broadcasts on the Internet.
“Denver is one of America’s top radio markets, so it’s hard to get a frequency,” Metzger said.
Some radion stations obtained their frequency license 70 years ago, when radio was first introduced.
Right now Denver has no open frequencies.
“Our goal is to keep pushing KVDU out there and to keep promoting. Getting a frequency is our number one goal, so that we can involve the students even more,” Metzger said.
However, campus involvement with the station will determine if KVDU obtains such funding, which would probably run into six figures.
Students will need to rally around the organization, garnering more support and ultimately, more funding from the chancellor.
According to Metzger, “We have a long way to go before even dealing with that. We are a new station. We have to get more students involved and aware.”
KVDU celebrated their second birthday last week. To promote their anniversary they printed 250 t-shirts and hundreds of flyers and stickers.
Although they gave away the majority of their promotional items, KVDU employees said there’s still a lack of student interest.
Funds allocated from the Student Media Board, which oversees all student media, are making it possible for the station to operate.
According to DJ and Marketing Director Trevor Williams, “Our main goal is to grow. If we had more influence, we would need more money.”
Williams said, “We have a big hump because we’re just not established yet. Lots of people don’t even know there’s a radio station here.”
