Post-modern dance at DU

The women’s studies Program and Phi Beta Kappa will present “Queer Space, Queer Time, Queer Energy; The Socio-Politics of Post-Modern Dance in America” tonight in Sturm Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Elegy of art opens in Denver

The Museum of Contemporary Art is currently showing a new exhibit, “Elegy: Contemporary Ruins” now through May 25.

The exhibit will feature the works of Jeff Brouws, Robert Dawson, Todd Hido, Christopher James, Susan Meyer, Patrick Nagatani, Catherine Opie, Ron Pollard and Camilo JosCB) Vergara.

The guest curator for the exhibit is Katharine Smith-Warren.

The exhibit will show the ruins of buildings and the “transitory character of modern architecture.”

Smith-Warren will also give a guided tour of the exhibit March 1 at 1 p.m.

The exhibit and guided tour are both $5 for adults and $3 for students. General admission to the museum is free the first Saturday of every month.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 12B-5:30 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday.

Special effects for films exhibited

Film students take note. Edson Williams, a special effects supervisor and artist will come to Denver to discuss his craft 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design Theater.

Williams has created visual effects for several Hollywood films during his 10-year career including the “Harrier sequence” in “True Lies” and the iceberg in “Titanic.”

During his presentation Williams will discuss his work on over 25 films and 15 music videos and will show behind-the-scences footage of his work on videos for Korn and Jennifer Lopez.

Williams’ other works include “The X-Files,” “Cruel Intentions,” “Broken Arrow,” “Blue Streak” and “Nick of Time.”

Williams will present several examples of his work from these films and explain how he achieved the effects that he created.

The theater is located at 6875 E. Evans Ave.

The event is free to the public.

Phillips, Freedance jazz up Denver

Dave Phillips and Freedance will perform 8 p.m. at Cameron Church Saturday.

The quartet is a contemporary jazz group that consists of Dave Phillips, acoustic bass; Rez Abbasi, guitars; John O’Gallagher, alto saxophone and Tony Moreno, drums/percussion.

The group has performed throughout Europe and in New York, and has just released their second album, Prayer.

Phillips, son of base player Barre Phillips, began playing the acoustic bass during the time he lived in France.

It was in France that he was also exposed to the West African, folk and jazz music that he uses today in his music.

Phillips, a native to California, returned to America to study classical music at the Mannes College of Music. He later was accepted to the graduate program at the Julliard School.

The group performs all original music.

The event is $10 for students. The church is located at 1600 S. Pearl St.

Dave Phillips and Freedance will also perform at the Chautauqua Community Center, 900 Baseline Rd. in Boulder, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m.

Admission is $12.

Senior theater projects performed

The theater Department will continue the senior project performances this weekend.

“Winter Series Part Two” will consist of “The Bear” by Anton Chekhov directed by Kim Axline, “Birthmarks” by Leslie Caputo and “Harold” by Jean-Claude van Itallie.

The performances will take place Friday and Saturday in the Byron Flexible Theatre in the Newman Center at 8 p.m.

Books needed for fundraiser

The Women’s Library Association and Friends of Penrose Library need books.

The books that are donated will be sold in the organization’s non-profit bookstore, The Book Stack, in the Mary Reed Building.

The store is run by volunteers, and sells the books at low prices. Proceeds from the store will go towards Penrose Library. Donations are tax-deductible.

The store is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For more information about the store call x13405.

EarthForce needs volunteers

EarthForce is looking for volunteers to help run and prepare for the EarthForce Win-Win Youth Summit to be held April 30 at the Denver Zoo.

The event is an opportunity to help promote environmental awareness among children. At the event the organization will show children a solar oven and a solar car to help them understand what solar energy is. Before the event the organization needs volunteers to help find exhibitors, coordinate school groups and find funding. The day of the event, the organization needs volunteers to work as greeters and chaperones, help set up, lead team building games, video interviews and paint faces.

The Lamont school will present Flo’s Underground 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Recital Salon in the Newman Center. The group will perform various jazz and Latin pieces.
