University of Denver students are being kicked out of bars and ski resorts because of binge drinking and rowdiness.
Although some students may consider these parties fun, rowdiness has negative repercussions for the university.
Winter Carnival had to be held outside Winter Park because the ski resort would not rent to DU students.
In addition, Keystone and Breckenridge have also refused to host a Winter Carnival because of binge drinking and destruction of condominiums by DU students in the late 1990s.
Last Halloween, Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity got kicked out of the old Brooklyn’s bar on Colfax for being crazy and having too many underage drinkers. Now new Brooklyn’s by the Pepsi Center won’t allow frat parties at all.
“As a former president [of a fraternity], it’s unfortunate that fraternities have to rent out bars for parties,” Marchello Chimenti, a fraternity member, said.
Fraternities that host bar parties do not make money from the party and therefore, it can be very expensive. Also, they are the ones responsible if something happens at their party.
One of the problems with off-campus bar parties is transportation. Buses usually do not run on time.
Furthermore, parties in the city can pose another problem for students. Being in unfamiliar areas, according to Chimenti, is dangerous.
Some parties get crowded and the bar will stop letting people in at a certain point. This does not guarantee a party for the students, which is what the fraternity or the group hosting the party is promising.
A big concern with these functions is alcohol poisoning. Underage students or people without fake IDs binge drink so that they can be drunk the whole night. Chimenti said that he’s seen some students have to be taken away from parties because of alcohol poisoning.
“It sucks to have to go off campus to go to an actual party,” said a sorority member. The lack of organized parties on campus is a problem for the social life of students.
A solution to these problems, Chimenti suggested, would be to have more controlled parties on campus.
Others agree that this would be the best way to lessen binge drinking, students getting in trouble with false IDs and transportation issues.
