WHAT DO DOMESTIC terrorists Tim McVeigh, sniper John Allen Muhammad and serial killers Donald Leroy Evans and Joseph Christopher have in common?
Besides being responsible for the deaths of countless lives, they also take part in another trend – they were all previously enlisted in the U.S. Army.
While the military is responsible for teaching and providing a foundation of protection for our nation, it has also unintentionally created a minority scale of harm as a by-product. Why? The basis of military training is to prepare for war, which involves massive amounts of manslaughter. Through boot camp, soldiers learn an altered version of Darwinism – how to not just fend for yourself, but keep the opposing side from surviving as well.
How does this apply to men responsible for terrorist attacks and mass killings? Through the militaristic approach learned through training, aggression and violence come out. Most know how to tone this trait down unless needed, but there are a few who battle with this. These are the men who go savage, the men who treat everyday life as an ongoing war.
I am not writing against the military and its methods of guidance, just the select few who take its practice out of context.
Unfortunately there is no way to differentiate, so every enlistee is taking a risk. Depending on the person, military training can strengthen the manner of defense or redirect in into tragic attacks.
