The AUSA Senate is considering an expansion of Saferide because of its growing popularity.

At its last meeting, the AUSA Senate learned that Saferide’s use has tripled this quarter. As of Oct. 25, 351 people have used the shuttle service.

Last fall, from September to the end of November, 124 people used it, Corp. Robert Meeks, the coordinator of the Saferide program, said.

This increase is due to a change in advertising, Meeks said. Saferide has sent brochures to residence halls and faculty members.

Its members have been on the Driscoll Bridge once or twice a week since the beginning of the year in an Outreach program that informs students of the crime on campus and means to prevent it.

The schedules are posted around campus and brochures can be found at all the front desks.

Freshman Senator Ben Burke said that more people would like more signs indicating pick up and drop off location information. The Saferide is a joint venture of Campus Safety, the Graduate Student Council, and the Senate. The top three pick up sites are dorms Centennial Halls, Centennial Towers and J-Mac.

Junior Senator Justine Brew addressed the possibility of its hours increasing. Currently, Saferide runs from 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

Meeks said at the end of the year, he will study its statistics and decide to make it a full-time service or continue it as it is. The service is available to all that have a valid Pioneer Card.

Installation of toiletries into the C Store is in the process of being accomplished. Ben Burke is working so that students will not have to go to Safeway.

The Advising Center that opened Oct. 28 is a success, Daniels College of Business Senator Andrew Petraitis said. Advising is available to non-business majors, he said.

Coming up with a Senior Gift has been an on going process.

This year’s Senior Gift is in the hands of Senior Senator Laura Szynskie. She has been in contact with DU senior Michael Lavine, who suggested an inscribed archway to the campus, placed at University Boulevard and East Evans Avenue.

Another gift that has been suggested was a reflection pond.

The Senate announced the DUPB will have a “Make Your Own DVD” night. The Senate likened this event to a karaoke, where the students will get to take their DVD home. The last meeting of the Senate is Nov. 13.

Over the winter break, the Senate will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Beginning winter break, the Senate will meet regularly at this time.
