THE MEN’S TENNIS team will be playing through the weekend in the TBA UNM Fall Invitational in New Mexico. This is their second tournament of the year. Their next tournament is Tuesday Oct. 23, in Las Vegas.
Women’s soccer faces Middle Tennessee
THE PIONEER WOMEN’S soccer team will be hosting their third straight game at Pioneer Field this Friday against the women of Middle Tenn. State The Pioneers begin play at 4 p.m., their last opponent was North Texas.
Colorado State Hosts BCA Invitational
COLORADO STATE WILL be hosting the 2002 Dell BCA (Black Coaches Association) Invitational, a pre-season men’s college basketball event. The event is in a round-robin format. There are four teams participating in the six-game tournament. The BCA is a non-profit organization founded to improve minority development at all levels of sports, on both national and international levels. Sports Illustrated ranks DU 73rd in sports
DU HAS BEEN recognized by Sports Illustrated as a hotbed of athletic activity. The home of the Pioneers was ranked as 73rd in the nation among Division I schools. CU Boulder was ranked 14th, Colorado State was 68th, and Air Force Academy was ranked 109th.Denver was also the highest ranked team in the Sun Belt Conference. “The University of Denver is an outstanding institution,” Director of Athletics and Recreation M. Dianne Murphy said. “It is an honor to be recognized for our sports programs, both intercollegiate as well as our excellent recreational program. We have accomplished a great deal in the last four years as a member of Division I and we have our sights set on even greater success this year.”The rankings combine factors ranging from performance during the ’01-’02 school year in the big five sports (baseball, football, hockey and men’s and women’s basketball); position in the ’01-’02 Sears Cup NCAA all-sports standings; number of varsity, club and inramural sports; range of recreational facilities; and whether or not spirit-boosting events like Midnight Madness were held.Overall Denver has won 24 national titles (17 in skiing, five in hockey and 2 in gymnastics), including 22 NCAA Division I titles.
Women’s volleyball gets good grades
DU ATHLETE-SCHOLARS continue to maintain a high academic standard of excellence, along with colleges across the nation. The Denver women’s volleyball players were the second DU team to be honored by a coaching body for their academic excellence, receiving the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Pioneers recorded a 3.38 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. They were one of 47 NCAA Division 1 teams honored. Last week, women’s basketball was also honored.
