Swimmers out of their league

DU’S 2002 Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving men’s champions, the Pioneers, are looking to make a statement this season, beginning with the Big West Invitational this weekend. The Pioneers moved into their new conference, the National Independent Swimming and Diving Conference (NIC), at the beginning of the year and hope to repeat their success by winning the conference championship. Several key swimmers are coming off their best-ever seasons.

Norwood on team of week

DU junior defender Jamie Norwood of Littleton was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. Norwood becomes the only player in the nation to be named to the prestigious team three times this season. Norwood earned the honors with her four-point performance in Denver’s back-to-back shutout wins over Sun Belt Conference opponents Middle Tennessee (6-0) and Western Kentucky (5-0). She recorded two assists in each game and helped the Pioneer defense limit both opponents to just four combined shots over the weekend. Through the first 13 games of the season, Norwood is third in the team in scoring with 14 points and leads the team with 10 assists. Norwood, with her four assists last weekend, moved into sole possession of second place on Denver’s all-time assist list with 27 career helpers. She is now just seven shy of first place Annette Wagner who has 34.
