The Rho Chapter of the Delta Zeta Sorority at the University of Denver will host its 13th annual volleyball tournament Oct. 5.
The tournament will be held on Driscoll Lawn, and the theme this year is “Saddle Up for Another Round,” also known as western.
“This year’s tournament is going to be the best tournament ever because there are so many new things this year,” said Liz Hunt, the Delta Zeta philanthropy chair.
The cost to participate in the tournament is $100 for teams within the Greek system and $50 for independent teams. Teams may consist of five to six people, and Greek houses may have more than one team. The teams must be on the lawn, in a condition to play volleyball by 9:00 a.m. There will be pizza provided for lunch to all participants.
Each year, Delta Zeta raises approximately $2,000 to support its philanthropy. The money raised goes towards the Delta Zeta Foundation which gives money to the Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., which educates the hearing impaired. The money will also go to the House Ear Institute in Las Angeles. This institute conducts research for people with hearing disabilities.
A western style jail system is new this year. A person can be placed in jail so that they are unable to play for a certain amount of time. For someone to be in jail for ten minutes costs $1, and for an entire game in jail it costs $10. A jailed person can be bailed out by paying, or having their team or someone else pay the jail fee. A jailed person must spend a minimum of one minute in jail. There will be no paying to get out of jail without having been in jail at all!
As before, there is going to be a raffle. Tickets for the raffle will cost $1. Prizes will be raffled off all day during the tournament. Prizes vary from gift certificates to local restaurants to items donated by businesses. This year, there will also be a ski rack and some items autographed by Denver Broncos raffled as well. There will be three grand prizes given away this year: one to the top Greek male team, one to the top Greek female team, and one to the top independent team. The grand prizes will be $200 in certificates to hooters, a trip to a local spa, and a prize that is yet to be determined.
No alcohol will be permitted at the volleyball tournament. However, to celebrate this year’s volleyball tournament, there will be a bar party Oct. 5th at Heavenly Daze. Anyone ages 18 and over is welcome to attend. People attending the bar party are encouraged to stick with the theme of the tournament, and dress western.
“The event is open to all members of the DU community, and non-Greek members are encouraged to attend and participate,” Hunt said. Another bonus to participating in the tournament is that designated Delta Zeta coaches will bring breakfast in bed to tournament participants before the tournament. “The best part about this is that breakfast is free,” said Hunt.
“Delta Zeta hopes to unite the Greek as well as non-Greek communities at DU through their philanthropy. They also hope that you participate in the tournament not only for fun, but most importantly to help support the hearing impaired,” Hunt said.
This year is the first year that the tournament has had a theme and the women of Delta Zeta hope to put on a fun and successful tournament.
