In last week’s issue, the article on page 1–“Freshman class large after interviews” 9-17-02–there were some errors. Here is the correct information.
The freshman class is not 1,200 students. (The Office of Admission and Office of Assessment is trying to refer the freshmen as first-year students). It is true that there are about 1,200 new undergraduate students on campus, but only a little more than 1000 of themare actually new first-year students and the remaining 200 or so aretransfer students. Some of those transfer students may be consideredfirst-year students, but not all 200 of them are. The Office of Budget andPlanning, the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Assessment actively track student registration numbers. In addition, at the end of the article it was noted that the cost ofthe Hyde Interview is about $100 per student and thatstudents on financial aid may not want to spend that much for aninterview. The $100 is the cost to the University not to the student.Students are not charged anything for the interview. However, they areresponsible for their travel costs to the closest city in which aninterview is held. Telephone interviews are also offered for those whochoose not to travel.
