New living and learning community offered
A new living and learning community has recently been added to a wing in Johnson-MacFarlane Hall. The newest community at DU will be the Social Justice Community, and will be offered this fall to first-year students.
The community will consist of 22 students who are interested in social justice and ethics. They will study the foundations and history of this field as part of living in the community.
The program will be directed by philosophy Professor Roscoe Hill.
Newman Center to have new pianos
The Newman Center for the Performing Arts recently received a $1 million donation by an anonymous donor and will be provided with 82 Steinway pianos for the Lamont School of Music. Through this donation and other personal contributions made by faculty and staff, Lamont will be one of 22 other music schools that use Steinway or Steinway produced pianos.
DU experiences increase of applications for fall
According to The Source, the newspaper circulated among the faculty of the university, the University of Denver has received an increase of applications for fall enrollment and has accepted more students than the previous year.
This spring DU accepted 3,200 students, compared to 2,915 last year. DU also expects 1,000 first-year students in the fall compared to the 938 who enrolled in 2001.
The university states that with the increase of admissions, the fiscal aspect of DU will continue to improve. The administration states that the budget continues to grow for the university and that there has been no recent deficits in recent years despite the recent recession in the country.
Students and volunteers learn about environment
The University of Denver held its annual Volunteer Day April 26-7. For Volunteer Day there were several activities held. Plains Conservation Center was one option for students. Students who took part in this planted trees along a river bank to help preserve the soil along the river and were educated about preserving the wildlife and land in the plains environment.
