The following response is in regards to an editorial printed on April 18, “More must be expected from higher learning.”
I was praying that the world would see how absurdly stupid Van Wilder was and come to its senses, now I know there’s at least one other thoughtful person out there.
Although the scene with the pounds of dog semen was disturbing, the most gut-wrenching part of the whole debacle had to be the fact that it was promoted as a movie that actual college students could identify with. Even the movie’s shot at a dynamic character with a brain (Tara Reid) was hopelessly superficial. Thankfully the pounds of blue eye shadow helped to hide the perpetually confused look on her over-tanned face.
After lame one-liners and lame “hidden moral messages” (since when do you see that much selling-out in a screw-ball comedy?), it hit me that this is how society views our generation: one indiscernible lump of massive mediocrity, distinguishable only by its propensity for trendy clothes and pop music.
Think about it, Britney Spears is our spokesperson. What’s her latest single, “I’m a slave for you”? God save us all! If there ever was a time when an actual generation’s future hung in the balance, the time is now.
Hand me that olive branch before I become a slave!
