Water splashing everywhere, people gasping to catch their breath, and inner tubes flying across the water marked the first annual Anchor Splash for Delta Gamma at El Pomar Natatorium in the Ritchie Center.
“Our philanthropy couldn’t have gone better. Thanks to our director of fundraising Breanna Digiorgio, we managed to raise over $2,000,” Maritza Dominguez, director of Anchor Splash, said.
The event began Sunday at noon with a pingpong relay in which team members had to swim with a spoon in their mouth and a pingpong ball on the spoon. Two other relays involved T-shirts and beach balls, and the final relay was called “Save the Mermaid.” In this event, relay teams had to transport their Delta Gamma coaches across the pool one at a time in an inner tube.
The event also hosted the “Funniest Swimsuit Competitio,” in which contestants had to come up with a creative way of expressing their support for Anchor Splash. The winner was awarded $50 in gift certificates. The title of Mr./Miss Anchor Splash 2002. was Hunter Johnson, aka “Safety Man,” of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The two runners-up were men from Theta Chi and Sigma Chi. First place for synchronized swimming went to Delta Delta Delta.
The “Air Band” competition was held in Sturm Hall last Saturday. In this skit competition Theta Chi took first place, Sigma Alpha Epsilon took second and Delta Zeta and Sigma Chi tied for third. The proceeds will go to the Anchor Center, a non-profit organization that works with blind children ages five and younger.
The overall winning team for Anchor Splash was Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
